How To Repair Damaged, Dry Hair

So, every 7 years or so, your body changes. This includes your hair.

These tips will also work for color-damaged hair. However, these tips are for individuals who have been doing everything they’re supposed to do, and out of nowhere, their hair feels, looks, or moves differently, also known as ‘train wreck hair’.

So, here are my top tips to jump-start your hair back to its most healthy state.

Get your ends trimmed – if your hair is severely damaged or the ends are split, you will be wasting your time and money on the tips below if you do not start here and trim those ends. Start with a “new canvas”.

How do you know if you need a professional trim…
1) Every time you touch your hair, long strands of hair fall out, or your hand is covered in hair
2) When your hair is straight, the ends look see-through
3) Your ends feel rough or different from the rest of your hair
4) You are finding a large amount of tiny pieces of hair on your countertop when doing your hair

Eat well – You should focus on what you are eating. Growing your hair from the inside out is a key factor in getting healthier hair. Take-out is ok if it is unprocessed foods. Oh, and to get you going, see my grocery list of staples for maximum hair health and growth. These foods provide healthy fats, oils, and proteins that your hair desperately needs.

Grocery list staples:
– Bananas
– Eggs
– Salmon
– Seafood (generally)
– Olives (black)
– Oils (avocado, grapeseed, olive)
– Sweet Potatoes
– Raw Oats
– Nuts
– Nut Butters
– Green Veggies
– Fruits (citrus fruit)
– Tea (peppermint, green, black)

Next, you want to exercise. Exercising or moving your body causes two things to happen regarding hair growth: it creates blood flow and production of sebum, which is produced by your sebaceous glands when you sweat. These two things protect and grow your hair.

This is why working out is a stress-relieving activity. So, what do you like to do? Start there… You can walk, run, do yoga, pilates, take an activity class, run with your dog, or do 20 20-minute home workout sessions. You should be having fun while unknowingly growing your hair. If you’re happy and healthy, your body will reflect it. Remember that!

You also need to work on scalp care. This is necessary because if your scalp is clogged or in an unhealthy state, there is no way a lush head of hair can grow from that. Your scalp needs oxygen just like a plant. If the plant does not have oxygen, it will die or not grow as strongly and healthily as it could. To solve this problem, co-wash but shampoo your hair at least once a month.
Side Note: Wigs, sew-ins, and similar products are okay, but remember to have them washed or redone as recommended. This is so your scalp can be cleaned and not sit for months with pores that are clogged  & dirty.

My favorite thing to do is oil my hair and scalp. You can choose to do this whenever you like; just do it. Curly hair is naturally dry, so when you’re oiling your hair, you’re helping get all the strains covered that your natural oils are not able to reach all the time. Massage your scalp with stimulating oils and coat the ends with carrier oils. My personal favorite carrier oils are olive oil, grape seed oil, castor oil, coconut oil, and almond oil.

Oils I recommend ❤❤❤
– Extra virgin olive oil (cold-pressed)
– Grapeseed oil
– Almond Oil
– Jojoba oil
– Rosa Oil
– Jamaica black castor oil (on edges)
– Avocado oil
– Tea tree oil (a stimulating oil, mix with a carrier oil, like olive oil)
– Peppermint oil (a stimulating oil, mix with a carrier oil, like olive oil)
– Lavender oil (mix with a carrier oil, like olive oil)

If you would like to do protective styling… Protective styling may help your hair grow because it is being unbothered. If done right and maintained correctly, this will help cut down the time spent on doing your hair every day. I would recommend twists, sew-ins (with limitations), wigs (with limitations), buns, fishtail braids, pigtail braids, and low & high buns. Give yourself a week or so in between protective styles if you notice a change in density. At this point, a new schedule will need to be made.

A good DIY hair mask goes a long way!

8 simple ingredients in your moisture and protein-rich DIY hair mask. Apply the mask to your entire head, place a shower cap on for at least 30 minutes, and then wash it out. You could also set under your hair steamer, making it a super moisturizing deep conditioning treatment.
– 1 avocado
– Half a banana
– 1/4 cup of honey
– 4 tbsp of aloe juice
– Half of a lime

You already know this one, but drink more water. My serious people out there, you know water is a must! No product on the market can fix internal dehydration. If you have the hair issues we mentioned above, a lack of sufficient quality water may be another factor contributing to the problem. To fix this quickly, you need to jump-start your hydration levels in your body. Do my “gallon a day for 7 days” process, and by the end of that, your skin/ eyes should look clearer. This is when you know your hydration levels are back where they need to be.

Also, after your journey, come back here and let us know how it’s going. The good, the bad, and the “I’m over it”! Understand, but I got you!
